Homeschool Library Builder (TOS Crew Review)

Okay, before you click away, let me assure you that this review will work for the average family with children in school as well.  When I received information regarding Homeschool Library Builder (HSLB) as a member of the 2009-2010 The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I'll admit I didn't know what I was getting into.  "Library Builder," huh?  How does that work?  Well, let me tell you.

HSLB provides an online bookstore full of used and new books for your home library at really great prices.  Okay, so what?  Well, here's what: my son wants more fiction books, but he reads them so fast, I really don't want to spend a lot on books for him.  So, I head on over to HSLB and click "Search by age" then click "Elementary" and I get a list of discounted books meeting that reading level (for example, 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving that originally retails for $16.95, HSLB sells for $5.99).

Let's talk about the homeschooler for a moment (after all, that's me!).  I want a book that complements my attempt at Charlotte Mason's approach for education, and I recently started following Ambleside Online.  So, on HSLB's website, I click "Search by Curricula" then click "Ambleside" then the grade, in this case I'll use "4th" - and BAM! I get 3 pages of discounted books ranging in price from $1.50 to just under $10.  That's not only a good value, it is darn convenient!

Ever used Book Adventure online?  It is a free online program that your kids can use to take short reading comprehension quizzes (somewhat like AR for schools).  Well, HSLB actually has a subdirectory of books that match the ones in the Book Adventure library of quizzes.  Pretty snazzy, if you ask me!

Okay, so now that you're hooked, I'll give you the bait: this month (which is almost over, so get a move on!), HSLB is offering 20% OFF their already discounted prices.  No coupon needed, so head on over and stock up on some good books for the rest of this chilly winter season.

Missing My blog...

Okay, it seems like forever since I wrote on here, and I really have nothing to say and too much to say all at once! There is so much that God is showing me lately, and there is so little time to do more than just soak it up and take one step at a time. The kids are great! We survived a few days of babysitting while my sister-in-law was in Hawaii. Yeah, that's a rub, right? :-) We enjoyed a teaser of Spring, which prompted us to begin some seedlings... (can you say "germination?" what a wonderful teaching opportunity it was!) we planted 2 different kinds of tomatoes, basil, early peas, and some flowers. Most of our seedling pots are on the kitchen table, but in a month or so, we will have some work to do to transplant it all outside! Yay! We learned today that Quin is actually halfway through first grade on his reading and math. That is a really nice surprise to a laid-back homeschooling mom! Calysta is trucking along in all her subjects beautifully. And Dania is

Perimenopause: What to Expect that You are NOT Expecting

Perimenopause: What to expect that you're NOT expecting. Chapter 1: The Hot (Fire) Flash (Surge) The fan must be on. In every room. And you are now Mr. Rogers. You have a sweater for every outfit. However, you live in tanks and short-sleeved shirts underneath because nakedness is frowned upon in public places and you must disrobe in haste, frequently. The socially-encouraged bondage device, a.k.a. the bra, is more despised than ever. Fuzzy socks are your friend, because your circulation is poor and your skin is dry. You will end up with a pair in every room because you inevitably needed them off for extended periods and wandered away from them, only to need them again in another room. Winter weather is both bone-chillingly cold and a delight to overheated skin. Sometimes simultaneously. Summer is intolerable. Do not get me started on having a fever while experiencing a hot flash. 😳 And while we're mentioning it.... "Hot Flash" is not an adequate phrase for the rush o

Lesson Planet (TOS Crew Review)

When I was given access to Lesson Planet for the purposes of reviewing their website, I was certain this was an answer to prayer!  Who doesn't want the most information for the best price?  We know there is a ton of information 'out there' on the internet that is free (or just about), but it can be time-consuming to find it all... and let's face it, time does often equal money. That's where Lesson Planet comes in: they offer an ad-free zone full of lesson plans, worksheets, and links to educational information that is geared for educators.  At this point in the process, I was hooked... but I have to be honest: actually using the site didn't measure up to my expectations.  For some parents/educators, this site would offer a great variety of lesson plans, worksheets, and teaching topics in a short amount of time.  For me, a fairly accomplished "Googler" (is that a word??), Lesson Planet didn't really offer much more than I had already been findi
